Private universities cannot be run for profit, says Supreme Court

The Supreme Court has ruled that private universities cannot be operated on a profit-making basis. The court issued directives to all states and union territories to submit audited accounts providing detailed information on surplus income, expenditure, fee collection and employee salaries.
The ruling aims to ensure transparency and accountability in the functioning of private educational institutions. The court's intervention seeks to monitor the financial health of private universities and prevent them from accumulating excess profits at the expense of students and academics.
