Supreme Court Collegium's opaque recommendations risk poor judicial appointments: Justice Bhuyan

Justice Ujjal Bhuyan has raised concerns about the opacity of the Supreme Court Collegium's recommendation process for judicial appointments, warning that unexplained decisions risk compromising the quality of the bench.
Addressing the issue of livestreamed court proceedings, Justice Bhuyan also flagged the misuse of fragmented oral observations by judges, noting that decontextualised clips distort public understanding of actual courtroom events and generate sensationalism.
The remarks underscore tensions between judicial transparency and the need for clear, accountable appointment procedures in India's higher judiciary.
