Supreme Court Initiates Safety Audit for Delhi-NCR; Key Legal Developments This Week

The Supreme Court initiated suo motu proceedings to examine safety and security of public spaces in Delhi-NCR following recent incidents. The Court emphasised that the right to live with dignity, free from fear of violence, is intrinsic to Article 21. It directed a 4-week safety audit across Delhi-NCR, noting that public spaces cannot become high-risk zones due to inadequate illumination, poor surveillance, or lax patrolling.
In arbitration law, the Supreme Court held that mere conduct of arbitral proceedings at a location does not establish it as the seat of arbitration. The Court restored Section 34 petitions before the District Judge, Sundargarh, finding them maintainable and within the prescribed limitation period.
Other developments include guidelines on minimum stipends for junior advocates, rulings on duplicate NEET-UG scorecards, and decisions on students' rights to dissent and trademark disputes.
