Supreme Court orders government to help Indian families file compensation claims with Russian embassy
The Supreme Court has directed the Ministry of External Affairs to appoint a nodal officer to assist families of Indians who joined the Russian military and have been killed in the ongoing war. The court ordered the officer to coordinate with affected families and facilitate their compensation claims with the Russian embassy.
The bench also directed the government to conduct DNA matching to verify deaths and help trace missing individuals. According to earlier submissions by the Centre, 217 Indians have joined the Russian military, with 49 deaths reported so far. The court's order aims to streamline the process of claiming compensation and repatriating the remains of deceased Indian nationals.
