36 Years On, SC Rules Haryana Woman Was Denied Indian Oil Job Due to Gender

A Haryana woman's 36-year legal battle against Indian Oil Corporation ended with a Supreme Court ruling that she was denied employment due to gender discrimination. Sumitra, now 63, had sought a ₹34-per-day position at an IOC plant, filing her case in 1989. The Court awarded her ₹12 lakh in compensation.
Sumitra stated that the monetary award cannot compensate for the years of struggle and lost opportunities. The case highlights persistent gender bias in hiring practices at major public sector undertakings.
