Sion Railway Over Bridge Second Girder Launch Set for August 8-9, Opening Delayed to End-September

The long-delayed Sion Railway Over Bridge in Mumbai is set to receive its second girder during the midnight of August 8-9, following a string of missed deadlines. The first steel girder was launched on June 22, while the second girder—originally scheduled for June 20 and later rescheduled multiple times—faces its latest launch attempt. Central Railway announced a special traffic and power block between Sion and Matunga stations to facilitate the work.
The bridge's opening has been pushed to the end of September, marking a delay of nearly one-and-a-half months from the original August 15 deadline. The BMC will require an additional 45 days after the second girder launch to complete remaining works on the eastern approach and other infrastructure. A senior civic official stated that the bridge is expected to open to traffic by late September once all works are finished.
The century-old bridge has remained closed since August 2024, causing significant congestion in surrounding areas. The reconstruction project is being jointly executed by the BMC and Central Railway, with the Railways managing the bridge structure and the BMC handling approach roads and pedestrian facilities.
