Suleman Bakery Case: Victim Testifies After 33 Years, Alleges Police Attack on Madrasa Students

A victim in the Suleman Bakery case related to the 1993 Mumbai riots testified in court on Wednesday, 33 years after the incident. The now 50-year-old witness, who was a student at a madrasa adjoining the bakery, alleged that police forcibly entered their room and violently assaulted students and teachers. He claimed over 200 students aged 8 to 22 were present in the three-story building at the time.
The witness recounted that after securing the main gate during communal tensions, they heard loud banging before police broke in and attacked them. He claimed he sustained a head injury that still causes occasional pain and that one teacher was shot during the assault. According to prosecution, 18 police officers, including then-joint police commissioner RD Tyagi, fired at the bakery on January 9, 1993, killing nine people.
