Supreme Court Orders Report on 25 Unnatural Deaths in Manipur Relief Camps

The Supreme Court on Thursday expressed concern over reports of unnatural deaths in relief camps in Manipur and directed the State Chief Secretary to submit a comprehensive report on 25 such deaths. A Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V Mohana sought details of circumstances surrounding the deaths, post-mortem reports, and measures taken to protect internally displaced persons.
The court was hearing petitions concerning investigation, protection, relief and rehabilitation following the 2023 ethnic violence in Manipur, including cases of sexual violence. Chief Justice Surya Kant questioned the State over information sought earlier, directing authorities to provide full documentation identifying causes of death and ensure adequate medical facilities in the camps.
The court also directed measures to ensure safety and dignity of internally displaced persons, emphasizing that relief cannot stop at providing shelter alone. The scrutiny reflects judicial concern over unexplained deaths, medical care and basic necessities in the camps.
