Supreme Court Plea Challenges MDR Fee on UPI Payments Above ₹2,000
A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court challenging the imposition of Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) on UPI payments exceeding ₹2,000. The petitioner has outlined that UPI transactions up to ₹2,000 and all person-to-person transfers will continue to be free of charge.
Small merchants receiving up to ₹1 lakh monthly through UPI QR codes have been exempted from the MDR fee. The plea contests the differential fee structure and its potential impact on digital payment adoption and merchant operations.
