Supreme Court: Falsely Quoting Judges in Court Clips Amounts to Crime

The Supreme Court has ruled that falsely attributing statements to judges in online court clips constitutes a criminal act, not merely contempt of court. A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant determined that misquoting judges' oral submissions and statements made by lawyers during court proceedings is a serious violation.
The bench emphasised that such misattribution goes beyond the traditional bounds of contempt and enters the realm of criminal conduct. The ruling addresses the growing concern over misleading court footage circulated online that distorts judicial statements and proceedings.
