Tamil Nadu CM Joseph Vijay Defends Ideology Mix, Says Government Draws From Periyar but Rejects Atheism Stance

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Joseph Vijay on Monday made a significant political and ideological clarification in the Assembly, stating that while his party respects the broader social philosophy of Periyar EV Ramasamy, it does not accept his atheistic views or rejection of religious belief.
Speaking during the Motion of Thanks on the Governor’s Address, Vijay said his government had selectively drawn inspiration from Periyar’s social justice framework while maintaining a belief in God. He emphasized that his party does not oppose any ideology but follows a balanced approach that includes multiple influences.
He further stated that his administration also takes inspiration from Dr BR Ambedkar, particularly his vision of equality and social justice, and from K Kamaraj, whose governance style he described as rooted in honesty and administrative simplicity.
Vijay used the Assembly speech to highlight his party’s political journey and electoral performance, claiming that it had emerged as a strong independent force after contesting without alliances. He said the party had secured 35 percent of the vote in the 2026 Assembly election, translating to over 17 million votes, which he described as a clear mandate from the public.
He also addressed criticism that his party is primarily led by a film personality, arguing that it was built through direct engagement with people rather than traditional political structures. According to him, the party first connected with the public and later formalized itself as a political organisation.
During his address, Vijay also referred to past political controversies, including allegations linked to the previous government regarding misuse of party funds, which led to protests and a walkout by opposition members in the Assembly.
Responding to remarks about Left parties, he said their alliance with his party was voluntary and not based on compulsion, while also noting confusion over their recent statements.
Vijay further compared his government’s positioning with earlier Dravidian-era administrations, stating that his leadership represents governance for ordinary citizens, continuing the legacy of past leaders while charting a distinct ideological path.
