Tamil Nadu's debt burden rises to ₹13.18 lakh crore, TVK government reveals
The Tamil Nadu government's White Paper has placed the state's total debt at ₹13.18 lakh crore, significantly higher than the headline figure of ₹10 lakh crore reported for 2025-26.
According to the report, the headline debt figure captures only direct state borrowings through market loans, institutional debt, and public account liabilities. The larger figure includes borrowings by public sector undertakings, statutory boards, and special purpose vehicles that the state guarantees or implicitly supports.
The disclosure highlights the full scope of Tamil Nadu's debt obligations beyond conventional government borrowing metrics.
