Tamil Nadu Governor Refers Private Universities Bill to President

The Governor of Tamil Nadu has referred the Tamil Nadu Private Universities (Amendment) Bill 2026 to the President for consideration. The bill seeks to remove existing restrictions on creating new private universities in the state. Currently, private universities must meet a minimum requirement of 100 acres of continuous land. The proposed amendment would eliminate this land restriction, potentially lowering barriers to entry for new private higher education institutions.
