Tata Electronics iPhone Factory Under Investigation for Water Pollution in Tamil Nadu

Indian government officials have begun inspecting farmland around a Tata Electronics factory in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, that manufactures iPhone components for Apple, following allegations of groundwater contamination. The facility, located about 25 miles south of Bengaluru, is central to Apple's strategy to expand iPhone production in India.
On Monday, district administration officials surveyed fields behind the factory alongside farmers who reported foul-smelling discharge and declining crop yields. Authorities allege Tata discharged wastewater into a rainwater harvesting pond that overflowed into neighboring agricultural wells. The pollution body warned Tata of a potential forced shutdown unless it provides satisfactory explanation for inspectors' findings. Tata has disputed the allegations, stating independent checks show it operates within regulatory norms.
