Telegram Features That WhatsApp Lacks, Now in Focus After Government Ban

India's decision to temporarily ban Telegram before the NEET UG 2026 re-examination has drawn attention to features unique to the platform that WhatsApp lacks. The government targeted specific Telegram capabilities including anonymous channels, large-scale file sharing, and an edit function that preserves timestamps.
Telegram allows users to communicate without sharing phone numbers through usernames, supports groups with up to 200,000 members compared to WhatsApp's 1,024 limit, and permits file transfers up to 2GB without compression. WhatsApp compresses images and videos automatically and restricts file sizes significantly. These differences make Telegram attractive for journalists, researchers, activists, and community managers, though the ban highlighted how the platform's anonymity features have also enabled misuse.
