“Tis the Season of Defections”: Mahua Moitra’s Praise for Suvendu Adhikari Stirs Political Buzz in Bengal TMC Circles

Political discussions in West Bengal have intensified after Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra made unexpected remarks about her past association with BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, drawing attention amid ongoing political instability and factional tensions within the state’s ruling party.
Speaking in an interview, Moitra reflected on her earlier political journey and described her past interactions with Adhikari as supportive during her initial years in politics. She said that despite their current political differences, she continues to remember his assistance during key phases of her early career.
Moitra recalled that during a difficult period when she did not receive a Lok Sabha ticket, Adhikari had offered reassurance, and she described it as a moment that stayed with her. She also mentioned that during her first electoral campaign in the state, Adhikari had supported her at public events when few senior leaders were present.
She added that while political paths have since changed and communication between them has reduced, personal bonds and past support remain part of her memory.
The comments have drawn attention in Bengal’s political circles, particularly at a time when the Trinamool Congress is facing internal strain and allegations of growing factionalism. The party is already dealing with leadership challenges and shifting loyalties among several members in both state and national politics.
Adhikari, once a senior figure in the Trinamool Congress, later switched to the Bharatiya Janata Party following differences with the party leadership and has since played a key role in strengthening the BJP’s position in West Bengal.
Moitra’s remarks come amid heightened political activity in the state, where both ruling and opposition camps are closely watching internal realignments and possible defections. While no political shift has been indicated by Moitra, her comments have nevertheless added fresh momentum to discussions around loyalty, relationships, and changing equations in Bengal politics.
