UCC: TDP and Shiv Sena back BJP, Congress gears up opposition

Home Minister Amit Shah's announcement to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) across 22 NDA-ruled states by 2029 has triggered sharp political debate. While TDP chief Chandrababu Naydu and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde have backed the plan, saying it strengthens national unity, other NDA partners have expressed reservations.
Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's JDU has sought talks with Shah, citing concerns. In a 2017 letter to the Law Commission reviewed by this outlet, Kumar had opposed rushing UCC without broad consensus and minority confidence. LJP(R)'s Chirag Paswan has highlighted India's diverse social fabric, implying caution. The Congress is preparing a major counter-campaign.
The TDP (16 Lok Sabha MPs) and Shiv Sena (12 MPs) have pledged support, framing UCC as promoting equality. The split within NDA underscores deep disagreement on this contentious social legislation.
