Ujjain: A city with 4,000 years of layered history

Ujjain carries the weight of four millennia of Indian history. The city, known variously as Ozene, Uzain and Ujjain, has been a significant centre since ancient times, serving as the capital of the Avanti kingdom and later the Mauryan empire.
The city is closely associated with classical Sanskrit poet Kalidasa and the legendary king Vikramaditya. It also hosts the revered Mahakaleshwar temple, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. Beyond its religious significance, Ujjain played an important role in the development of Indian astronomy and remains a cultural landmark.
