Delhi Court Convicts Sukesh Chandrasekhar for Impersonating Supreme Court Judge

Tis Hazari Court's Chief Judicial Magistrate Harshita Mishra convicted Sukesh Chandrasekhar under IPC Sections 170, 189, and 507 for impersonating a Supreme Court Judge. The Court found that Chandrasekhar, while in police custody, used a police official's mobile phone to contact a judicial officer and falsely represented himself as a sitting Supreme Court Judge to influence bail decisions.
The Court held that testimony from the Judicial Officer was credible and corroborated by call detail records and circumstantial evidence. It distinguished this case from ordinary impersonation, noting that the conduct constituted an attempt to interfere with judicial decision-making and harm institutional integrity of the Judiciary.
Chandrasekhar was sentenced to 2 years rigorous imprisonment each under Sections 170 and 189, and 4 years under Section 507, with sentences to run consecutively. The Court criticised investigative lapses but upheld the prosecution case, emphasizing that the cumulative gravity of offences warranted a substantial sentence.
