India-US Trade Deal in Final Stages, Outstanding Issues Remain

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said on Thursday that negotiations on the India-US trade agreement are approaching their final stage, though cautioned that a deal is not yet imminent. Speaking after the G20 Trade Ministers' Meeting in Milwaukee, Greer stated both countries have identified key areas of disagreement and are working to resolve them. He indicated that US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi could speak soon to assess progress.
Greer characterised the negotiations as being in the "short strokes," suggesting they are nearing completion. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal earlier described the proposed agreement as "almost done and dusted," while noting India awaits competitive tariff advantages before finalisation. Both officials said ongoing discussions remain constructive and productive.
