US lawmakers write to Trump's secretary of state over Delhi detentions; India rejects interference

A group of US lawmakers has written to the Trump administration's secretary of state regarding detentions in Delhi, escalating diplomatic tensions between the two countries.
The letter follows India's rejection of earlier statements by US politician Jayapal concerning changes to India's electoral rolls. New Delhi characterized those remarks as unwarranted interference in its internal affairs.
India has maintained that matters pertaining to its electoral processes and domestic law enforcement fall within its sovereign purview and are not subject to external commentary or intervention.
