US launches voter-roll verification drive similar to India's SIR exercise

The United States has initiated a large-scale operation to review voter-registration records and identify suspected illegal registrations and ineligible voters. The exercise, driven significantly by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the investigative arm of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), involves acquiring voter rolls, analyzing data, generating investigative leads, and conducting field investigations.
According to internal documents reviewed by CNN, HSI has ingested 50.6 million records from a Justice Department dataset and 48.4 million records from independent sources. The scale of the operation underscores that the United States, despite being the world's most powerful democracy, treats voter rolls as subject to scrutiny rather than as untouchable documents.
This US initiative provides context to India's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, which the Opposition has criticized as potentially excluding genuine voters and portraying voter-roll verification as an attack on democracy. The comparison highlights that democratic nations routinely conduct voter-roll verification exercises to maintain electoral integrity and identify anomalies where electoral laws may have been violated.
