Vande Mataram and Tamil Thai Vazhthu: What is the protocol?

The Tamil Nadu Assembly recently passed a resolution making Tamil Thai Vazhthu the first song at state functions, with the government issuing a corresponding order. This development raises questions about the established protocol for national songs at official events.

Vande Mataram, historically significant in India's independence movement, and Tamil Thai Vazhthu, the Tamil regional anthem, have different roles in state ceremonies. The resolution signals a shift in how Tamil Nadu structures its official functions and the precedence given to regional and national symbols.
