VHP's call to restrict Muslims from Garba events draws political backlash

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad has called for restricting non-Hindu participation in Garba and Dandiya events during Navratri across Maharashtra, citing concerns over incidents during such celebrations. The VHP issued guidelines for organisers including Aadhaar verification and applying Tilak on participants, stating the measure was to protect the religious character of the festival.
The directive has drawn sharp criticism. Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut opposed the restrictions, arguing that Muslims have contributed to India's freedom and cultural struggles and should not be excluded from Navratri events. Raut questioned the consistency of such measures with stated principles of communal harmony.
The issue reflects ongoing tensions around Hindu festival celebrations and questions of religious participation and inclusivity during these events.
