Mumbai's Vidyavihar Flyover Set to Open as Approach Road Cost Rises by ₹10.62 Crore

Mumbai's long-awaited Vidyavihar Connector is expected to open to traffic soon. However, the project's approach road cost has risen by ₹10.62 crore, bringing the revised total from ₹95.55 crore to ₹106.18 crore. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation's standing committee will review the additional expenditure proposal on Wednesday.
The cost increase stems from a realigned road design. The original 36.50-metre-wide alignment on the western side faced obstruction from existing buildings. Rather than demolish structures and displace approximately 53 residential tenement holders, the BMC modified the road alignment and adjusted the bridge design accordingly. These modifications incurred the additional ₹10.62 crore in extra and contingency costs.
Once operational, the flyover will connect Ramkrishna Chemburkar Marg in the east to Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg in the west, with direct pedestrian access to Vidyavihar railway station. The connector is projected to reduce peak-hour travel time between Vidyavihar East and West from 40–45 minutes to around 10–15 minutes, easing traffic congestion in the area.
