West Bengal shuts 252 madrassas over inadequate approvals and infrastructure

The West Bengal government has ordered the closure of 252 madrassas across the state following a statewide survey conducted by the Minority Affairs and Madrassa Education Department. An additional 100 institutions have been issued show-cause notices. The survey, which began in June, assessed both government and private madrassas for required approvals, infrastructure standards, and academic compliance.
According to district administration reports, approximately 2,396 madrassas were found operating without registration. The crackdown targeted institutions lacking necessary approvals, basic infrastructure, or deviating from prescribed educational standards. Minister Kshudiram Tudu stated that madrassas meeting regulatory requirements and holding valid approvals would be permitted to continue functioning.
