Xi, Modi Hold Talks at BRICS Summit, Push for Stronger India-China Ties

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi held bilateral talks on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on Saturday. Both leaders stressed the steady improvement in India-China relations over the past two years and committed to consolidating the gradual thaw in ties that had been strained by the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes.
Xi said bilateral relations had moved to a "new elevation" following meetings in Kazan in 2024 and Tianjin in 2025. He highlighted resumed institutional exchanges, expanding cooperation, and growth in bilateral trade. Xi stressed that China and India should view each other as partners rather than rivals and treat each other's development as an opportunity.
Modi underlined that peace and tranquillity along the border remain essential for bilateral development. He emphasized adherence to existing agreements and efforts towards a fair and mutually acceptable settlement of the boundary question, stressing the importance of mutual respect, sensitivity and interest.
