Australia Proposes 'My Feed, My Way' to Give Users Control Over Social Media Algorithms

The Australian government has released draft legislation for a Digital Duty of Care framework aimed at creating a safer online environment. A key feature is "My Feed, My Way," an initiative designed to give users greater control over social media algorithms.
Under the proposal, Australians over 16 will be able to easily opt in or out of algorithmic content recommendations. Social media platforms would be required to notify users about available choices for their default feeds. Users can select personalised algorithmic content or opt for feeds showing only content from friends and creators they follow.
The draft laws also enhance safeguards for children and expand powers of Australia's eSafety Commissioner to combat harmful online content. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated the initiative aims to give people control rather than government control over their digital experiences.
