Bamboo mass flowering poses ecological threat, warns study

A study by Kerala Forest Research Institute warns that synchronous bamboo flowering and die-off events can trigger significant ecological crises. The research indicates that mass flowering opens pathways for invasive weeds to establish, increases wildfire risk, and can cause rodent population surges.
The study also highlights potential wildlife conflict, noting that ecological disruptions may push elephants and other animals into farmland. Bamboo die-off following flowering events can leave vast tracts vulnerable to secondary ecological disturbances, affecting forest stability and rural livelihoods across affected regions.
