Bengal High Court declines to intervene in Speaker's LoP appointment
The Calcutta High Court has refused to interfere with the Bengal Assembly Speaker's decision to appoint Ritabrata as Leader of the Opposition. The court noted that while the Speaker could have invited both parties before making the appointment, it would not grant interim relief at this stage to maintain orderliness of the House.
The ruling upholds the Speaker's constitutional authority in selecting the opposition leader, even as it acknowledged procedural concerns about the manner of the appointment.
