CDSCO Warns Against Self-Medication with Painkillers, Antibiotics

The Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) has issued a warning against indiscriminate self-medication with painkillers and antibiotics. In a circular, Drugs Controller General Dr Rajeev Singh Raghuvanshi noted that most non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and antibiotics are restricted medicines requiring prescriptions from registered medical practitioners.
The regulator advised the public not to repeatedly use painkillers or antibiotics without doctor's guidance, avoid leftover antibiotics, or share medications with others. The warning stressed that antibiotics should not be taken for viral infections where they are not clinically needed. Persistent symptoms warrant medical consultation rather than self-treatment.
People with existing kidney disease, dehydration, or cardiovascular conditions face heightened risk and must inform doctors before taking NSAIDs. Doctors have been advised to prescribe such medicines judiciously, using the lowest effective dose for the shortest duration necessary.
