China used Claude AI to target 50 organisations, track Uyghurs and develop military systems: Anthropic report

Anthropic, parent company of Claude AI, published a detailed investigative report on Thursday detailing how threat actors misused its AI models for cyber operations, surveillance, weapons development and scams. The report, covering activity from December 2025 to August 2026, documents operations Anthropic identified and disrupted through its Threat Intelligence team.
The investigation revealed a sustained espionage operation conducted by Chinese-speaking operators likely based in Changsha, Hunan province. Two operators, identified as undergraduate computer science students at a Chinese university, used Claude as an "engineering and orchestration layer" for coordinated offensive activities including attempts to breach production systems, reconnaissance of foreign government networks in the Middle East, Europe and Southeast Asia, and malware development.
Anthropic said it disrupted every operation documented in the report, marking the company's most detailed public disclosure of AI misuse to date.
