4.2-magnitude earthquake strikes Uttarkashi in Uttarakhand

A 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck Uttarakhand's Uttarkashi district on Saturday night, October 10, 2026, sending strong tremors across the Uttarkashi town and the Yamunotri valley. According to the National Centre for Seismology, the earthquake struck at 8:07 p.m., with its epicentre located two kilometers northwest of Uttarkashi at a depth of 11 kilometers.
The tremors were strong enough to cause televisions inside homes to shake, according to Purushottam Uniyal, a priest from Kharsali village, the winter seat of Yamunotri. The sudden and intense tremors triggered panic, prompting people to rush outdoors. This earthquake marked the second tremor measuring above 4.0 on the Richter scale to hit Uttarakhand in four days, following a 4.9-magnitude earthquake that struck Chamoli district on October 6.
Officials of the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority (USDMA) reported that no damage had been reported so far following the seismic event.
