EU to restrict metal scrap imports from India from May 2027

The European Commission has proposed new restrictions that will limit India's ability to import metal waste from the EU bloc, effective May 2027. The regulation will particularly impact aluminium scrap shipments to India.
The move comes after the Commission shelved an earlier plan to impose export duties on aluminium scrap. India is among 32 non-OECD nations that have sought exemptions for non-hazardous waste categories under the new framework.
Countries seeking exemptions must demonstrate that waste materials will undergo environmentally sound treatment.
