Gujarat deploys AI to protect lions from trains; 6,682 diverted in two years

The Gujarat government has implemented an artificial intelligence system to protect Asiatic lions from train collisions along railway tracks crossing the Gir Forest region. The AI technology has successfully diverted 6,682 lions away from railway lines over a two-year period, resulting in zero fatalities caused by trains.
The initiative combines sensor technology and automated alert systems to detect lion movement near railway corridors. When lions approach the tracks, the system triggers diversions that guide the animals away from danger, protecting both wildlife and train operations.
This conservation effort addresses a critical challenge for India's endangered Asiatic lion population, which is concentrated in Gujarat's Gir region, home to over 600 lions.
