India holds 1,500 tonnes of soybean cargo over origin verification doubts

Indian customs authorities have detained approximately 1,500 tonnes of soybean cargo at Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) after importers failed to produce documentation establishing that the shipments originated in Niger and were eligible for duty-free import benefits.
The action reflects growing scrutiny over a marked rise in soybean imports claimed to originate from Niger. Authorities suspect that beans sourced from Nigeria may have been deliberately misdeclared as Nigerien produce to circumvent applicable import duties.
The hold-up underscores India's tightened verification procedures for agricultural imports and efforts to prevent tariff evasion through misrepresentation of product origin.
