India Condemns Attack on Ship in Black Sea That Killed Two Seafarers

India's Ministry of External Affairs on October 6 condemned an attack on the cargo ship MV Royad Mammadov in the Black Sea that resulted in the deaths of two foreign seafarers and injuries to several crew members, including Indian nationals. The injured seafarers were rescued by Romanian authorities and are receiving medical treatment. All three Indian nationals aboard the vessel are confirmed safe.
The MEA thanked Romanian authorities for their swift rescue operations. India expressed grave concern over attacks on commercial shipping and international waterway traffic, stating such incidents undermine global commerce and seafarer welfare. The Ministry reiterated its call for dialogue and diplomacy to resolve ongoing conflicts.
The statement also referenced India's recent initiative launched in September 2026 alongside Liberia—a 25-nation "Group of Friends on Safety and Security of Shipping and Seafarers" formed during the UN General Assembly to protect merchant crews and commercial vessels against targeted attacks.
