Trump warns Iran of 'annihilation' at UN, expects deal after US midterms

US President Donald Trump addressed the 81st UN General Assembly in New York on Tuesday, issuing a stark warning to Iran. He said he could "annihilate" the Islamic Republic if a peace deal is not reached, while expressing confidence that an agreement would be struck after the US midterm elections. Trump noted that "it doesn't make sense for them not to" accept a deal that would allow Iran to rebuild as a strong nation.
Trump also highlighted US Navy operations in the Strait of Hormuz, stating that American vessels have escorted over 1 billion barrels of oil through the waterway—more than at any point since the conflict began in February. He thanked the UN Security Council for passing a resolution condemning Iran's attacks on commercial shipping. Trump indicated that Iran is watching the outcome of the US midterm elections before making strategic decisions.
