Kerala Monsoon Set To Arrive Around June 4; IMD Issues Rain Alerts Across State

The southwest monsoon is expected to make its entry into Kerala around June 4, according to the latest assessment by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), raising hopes of widespread rainfall after weeks of summer heat across the region.
Weather officials said atmospheric conditions are rapidly becoming favourable for the seasonal transition, with rain activity likely to intensify across the state over the next few days. The expected onset over Kerala marks the beginning of India's crucial monsoon season, which plays a vital role in agriculture, water resources and overall economic activity.
Providing an update on the evolving weather pattern, IMD scientist Neetha K. Gopal said the department anticipates substantial rainfall beginning from Tuesday evening, with most districts expected to experience wet weather during the coming week.
"The conditions for the onset of monsoon are getting ready, so we can declare it on 4th June. We will witness a good amount of rainfall from this evening. In the coming seven days, all parts of Keralam will be under 'Orange' or 'Yellow' alert as we expect a heavy spell of rain," she said.
The weather department has indicated that both Orange and Yellow alerts are likely to remain in force across different parts of Kerala, especially in areas vulnerable to intense rainfall. Authorities are closely monitoring hilly regions where prolonged downpours could increase the risk of landslides and related disruptions.
"We need to be concerned if heavy rains continue. Orange alert with restrictions will be there for hilly regions," Neetha K. Gopal added.
While Kerala prepares for the monsoon's arrival, neighbouring Maharashtra is also expected to receive rainfall activity. Mumbai began Tuesday under partly cloudy skies and warm conditions, with temperatures hovering around 31 degrees Celsius during the morning hours.
The IMD has issued a Yellow Alert for Mumbai, Thane and Palghar, warning of possible rain and thunderstorm activity. Air quality in Mumbai remained favourable, with the city's Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded in the 'good' category.
