Madanapalle weavers struggle to preserve heritage craft amid economic decline

Madanapalle, long celebrated as a handloom and silk saree hub, is witnessing a sharp decline in its weaving tradition. The community that has sustained the craft for generations now confronts mounting economic pressure, with weavers earning diminishing returns from their work.
Multiple challenges threaten the survival of the trade. Declining profitability, health concerns linked to the work, and stiff competition from mechanized power looms have made it increasingly difficult for traditional weavers to sustain their livelihoods. Compounding the crisis is a generational shift—younger members of the community are reluctant to take up weaving as a profession.
The erosion of this heritage craft raises concerns about both cultural preservation and the economic survival of families that have depended on weaving for centuries.
