Meghalaya HC Panel Seeks Urgent Action Plan Against Illegal Coal Mining

A Meghalaya High Court-appointed committee led by Justice BP Katakey has called for urgent action to combat illegal coal mining in the state. The panel has urged the government to notify a comprehensive action plan addressing the issue and to fence off abandoned rat-hole pits that pose safety and environmental risks.
The committee's directive comes as part of judicial oversight on mining practices in Meghalaya, where illegal coal extraction has long been a concern. The state is expected to respond with concrete measures to implement the recommendations.
