Mizoram cracks down on codeine syrup abuse, threatens pharmacy licence cancellations

Mizoram has intensified its efforts to combat the abuse of codeine syrups, with state authorities issuing stern warnings to pharmacies about potential licence cancellations for non-compliance. The crackdown targets over-the-counter medicines that have emerged as a significant public health concern due to widespread misuse across the state.
As part of the enforcement drive, the health department has issued directives to pharmaceutical retailers requiring them to implement stricter protocols in dispensing codeine-based products. These measures aim to regulate access to the medicines and prevent their diversion for non-medical purposes. Pharmacies that fail to adhere to the new regulations or are found enabling abuse face suspension of their operating licences.
The state's move reflects growing alarm over codeine syrup misuse, which has developed into a notable public health issue requiring immediate regulatory intervention and stricter oversight of pharmaceutical retail operations.
