National Wildlife Week 2026: India Emphasises Coexistence With Nature for Biodiversity Conservation

India is marking National Wildlife Week from October 2 to 8, 2026, beginning on Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary. The annual observance aims to raise public awareness about protecting the country's biodiversity and natural habitats, and encourages participation in conservation activities benefiting ecosystems and endangered species.
Wildlife is integral to ecosystem health. Forests, wetlands, grasslands, rivers and coastal areas provide food, shelter and breeding grounds for countless species while supporting human communities through resource provision, water cycle regulation and climate resilience. Human activities including deforestation, habitat destruction, pollution and urban expansion threaten wildlife habitats, sometimes forcing animals closer to settlements and heightening human-wildlife conflict.
Rajasthan is marking the week by unveiling an anthem for Keoladeo National Park, celebrating its rich biodiversity and heritage as a significant wetland where migratory birds gather across seasons and continents.
