Naveen Patnaik Invokes Gen Z In First Street Protest Since 2024 Election Loss

Former Odisha Chief Minister and BJD president Naveen Patnaik led his first major street protest since losing power in 2024, opposing the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act, 2026. The protest targeted the recently passed legislation, which the Biju Janata Dal argues will erode Odisha's taxation powers over mineral rights and mineral-bearing land. Patnaik stated the amendment would cost the state thousands of crores of rupees annually and undermine the rights of the state. The BJD criticized the central government for passing the legislation in Parliament without adequate discussion and blamed both the Centre and the ruling state government for their silence.
Patnaik explicitly invoked Gen Z during the protest, framing the central government's mining law as a threat to the financial independence and resource security of future generations in Odisha. Addressing the ruling BJP government, Patnaik stated, "If you betray this land, you will face condemnation forever. Gen Z will never forgive you." This appeal to younger voters reflects his increasingly aligned positioning with youth demographics over the past year.
Patnaik declared he would fight the law "until his last breath to protect the future of the state's youth," underscoring his effort to rebuild political momentum following the BJD's electoral setback in 2024. The protest demonstrates a strategic pivot toward youth engagement as part of his broader realignment of political approach.
