NHAI tells Supreme Court it cannot build animal shelters, cites ₹7,000 crore cost
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has informed the Supreme Court that it cannot construct animal shelters along national highways, citing prohibitive costs estimated at ₹7,000 crore.
The submission was made during hearings on the matter of animal welfare and highway safety. NHAI argued that the financial burden of building and maintaining such shelters across the extensive highway network is beyond its budgetary capacity.
The development comes amid ongoing discussions in the Supreme Court on balancing infrastructure development with animal protection measures on national highways.
