Parliamentary Panel Flags CUET MCQ Format, Seeks Exam Design Review

A parliamentary committee has expressed concerns about the Common University Entrance Test (CUET), stating that its multiple-choice question format may not be suitable for humanities and social sciences disciplines. The department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Education, chaired by Rajya Sabha MP Digvijaya Singh, submitted a report to the Rajya Sabha Chairman recommending a review of the exam's design and question quality.
The committee noted that CUET was introduced from 2022-23 to reduce student burden and ensure fairness across different boards. However, it observed that multiple-choice answers are particularly ill-suited for humanities and social sciences, which require independent and subjective thinking. The committee recommended aligning the CUET examination with the principles outlined in the National Education Policy 2020.
