Nepal-Tibet Flash Floods Kill 469, Destroy Villages and Infrastructure
A catastrophic flash flood in Nepal has claimed at least 469 lives and left over 1,468 people missing, destroying villages, roads and hydropower infrastructure across a roughly 10-mile swath along the Trishuli River near the Nepal-China border. Satellite imagery reveals the scale of devastation, showing the Rasuwagadhi border post completely washed away.
Scientists suggest the flood may have been triggered by a massive glacier fragment breaking off and temporarily blocking the river, causing water to accumulate before surging downstream with tremendous force. Nepal's disaster authority reported 359 deaths and 910 missing, including 517 foreign nationals. China reported at least 3 dead and 558 missing in Tibet's Gyirong County.
People from over 30 countries remain unaccounted for, including foreign tourists and Hindu pilgrims heading to Mt Kailash. Rescue operations have recovered 50 foreigners by air so far.
