Supreme Court Issues Notices Over Child Deaths From Malnutrition In MP's Balaghat

A Supreme Court bench led by Chief Justice and comprising Justices Surya Kant, Jaymalya Bagchi, and V. Mohana issued notices to the Union government and three states on Friday over deaths of children from malnutrition. The notices were issued based on a public interest litigation filed in the matter.
The bench expressed serious concern over child deaths resulting from lack of official intervention and malnutrition in the region. The court also noted the spread of preventable diseases among children. States that received notices include Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, and Maharashtra.
The lawyer representing the petitioner told the bench that deaths from malnutrition occur daily in tribal villages, and that the administration had failed to act despite receiving advance information about disease spread in the area.
