Taiwan Hopes for Xi-Trump Talks, Seeks Sustained US Military Aid

Taiwan is looking to maintain its military support from the United States while expressing hope for talks between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump. The US is legally bound to provide Taiwan with defence capabilities. Although the US does not formally recognise Taiwan as a country, it remains the island's most significant informal supporter and primary arms supplier.
Taiwan, a self-governed democracy, is claimed by China as its own territory. The island has long depended on US military backing to counter Beijing's military assertiveness.
