Trump set to greet Xi at Andrews Air Base as US-China summit signals renewed diplomacy

Chinese President Xi Jinping will arrive at Joint Base Andrews on September 23, where US President Donald Trump plans to greet him on the tarmac—an unusual courtesy rarely extended to visiting heads of state. The gesture contrasts sharply with Trump's May visit to Beijing, when Xi was absent from the airport. Xi's Washington itinerary includes a formal White House arrival, military review, state dinner and bilateral talks on September 24.
The summit comes as trade, tariffs, rare earths, artificial intelligence, Taiwan and geopolitical tensions have become interconnected between the world's two largest economies. Both leaders are attempting to contain strategic rivalry through face-to-face diplomacy despite remaining competitors.
For India, the meeting carries strategic weight. New Delhi has maintained careful equidistance among Washington, Moscow and Beijing. Any US-China understanding could reshape the environment in which India performs its balancing act, though it would not automatically alter New Delhi's strategic calculations.
